What line setup should I use for trolling in a bay? Penn 309 reel. 20lb line for more length? 30lb more pwr?
Kent S asked:
Most of the fish will max out at 50LB. Expect barracuda, Kingfish, mackerel, odd tarpon, odd snook.

30 lb test is much better.

A Penn 309 will hold over 300 yards of 30 pound line. That’s more than you’ll need for fish that size, so there’s no reason to fill it with 500 yards of 20. So go with the 30. (If you have problems with bigger fish, I’m sure the reel is strong enough to handle 40 pound.)

Go with thirty pound test and a very good quality line, this way there is less chance of a snap off, also set the drag on the reel so that if the fish wants to run it can, play the fish don’t just crank it in or you will snap the line, buying good quality line helps as the quality will reflect on its true breaking strain, i like Berkley big game
If you still dont feel confident upgrade to a bigger reel and higher breaking strain, try to choose a supple line, happy fishing.
