The Attractions of Key West
A visitor to this island heaven does not need to believe that they are leaving the world behind, unless they actually need to. There’s lots to see and experience in Key West and, as the island is little, nothing is extraordinarily far from where you are staying. Naturally, there are beaches, a lot of them on the south side of the island. From the busy Smathers Beach with its volleyball games and watersport concessions to the much quieter beach at Fort Zachary Taylor, you can need to sample them all.
There also are many parks on the island and, again, your decision will rely on what you need to do.
From the 19th century Fort Zachary Taylor park to the gardens at West Martello Towers, to the ball fields and tennis courts at Bayview Park, and all of the others in between, you are certain to find something to fit your selected activity. Key West has plenty of history and plenty of museums to show for it. The best place to start would be a ride on one of the tour trains or trolleys ; the conductor will relate stories with local color and you may get an idea of places you will need to revisit to learn more.
A cruise out to the reef from Key West Bay will show you the island’s beauty from a different point of view and will introduce you to the beauty hidden underneath the waves.
Key West’s waters also provide great diving and snorkeling experiences for the more brave. The less brave may need to thumb a ride on one of the glass bottom boats that will show you the reef without your getting wet. Canoeing and ecotours are becoming extraordinarily popular for the nature lover, and some even feature dolphin encounters. The Florida Keys is a fishing Mecca and there are many personal and party boats that will give you a great deep sea fishing experience.
