Planning a griswald-type family road trip from NE PA to Key West FL- In search of points of interest?

Jennuine asked:

My self, along with my husband and in laws, are planning a Griswald-type family vacation/roadtrip…from Schuylkill county Pennsylvania to Key West Florida in July of 2009. There are no kids along on this trip, and we are out for the pure fun and craziness of the experience. Our plan is to make this a 2 week trip, ending with 1 week in Key West, but want to take our time and see and do some things along the way. We will be traveling I-95, but are willing to get a bit off track for something of interest, the more weird and crazy, the better, even just roadside things that are good photo stops, again the crazier the better. If anyone has any suggestions for points of interest, you can possibly help make our family road trip the fun and crazy experience we are hoping it to be!!!

check out roadside america web site for quirky places along the way.

If you have never been there you must stop at South of the Border

Stop and spend a day at the capital do a walking tour of all the historical buildings; spend a day in Norfolk VA and tour the Sub base there; nothing much in North Carolina on I95, but you can spend a couple days at South of the Border in SC, it’s a tourist trap, but lots to see and do there; go to the beach at Dayton FL, they have cute shops down by the beach. Invest in a CB for your car, you can get a cheap one for about $50 and the antenna about $25, you can listen for the bear reports (where the cops are at) and accident reports if traffic gets backed up. Never been to the Keys so don’t know whats down there. have a safe trip
